After giving y’all a 6-3 weekend in College Hoops, I decided to give myself the Monday off from the blog. I’m not going to give some corny written apology like Chris D’Elia because I’m not sorry. Credit to me for utilizing a self-care day to watch more college hoops and catch up on sports after a great weekend hanging with friends from the Laradise days.
College Hoops:
It was a huge weekend for blue blood programs and the dorks who root for them. It’ll be tough for Kentucky to turn things around in time to boost their resume and their win over Tennessee shows the volatility in the SEC. Duke had a huge win this weekend and followed it up by beating the snot out of Syracuse today. Their recent run of success will lead to a classic Tobacco Road Showdown with UNC to end both of their seasons.
The B1G and Big 12 are must watch conferences and demonstrated that again this weekend. Iowa +2 against a skidding Wisconsin team might’ve been the easiest call of the weekend instead of my inappropriately labeled lock of the century Texas Tech@Kansas (classic case of hungry dogs run faster). Kansas is perfectly positioning itself for its typical round of 32 exit in the tournament; and that scrawny ginger headed tool shushing the crowd will be the same one pouting with a towel over his head come March.
Michigan went into Columbus and won the most entertaining game of the NCAA Basketball season so far. This game had everything a classic tournament game would have between momentum swings and back to back highlight plays. I so badly wish the Michigan football team was competitive so we could have this type of energy during the greatest rivalry in college sports, but I’ll take the basketball condolence prize. Hail to the victors.
Wyoming took care of business in Albuquerque this weekend and swept the Lobos. It’s ain’t your daddy’s New Mexico team, but I’m just enjoying the process watching this young team. Last year, our disorganized team reached the Semifinals and pushed a (would’ve been) tournament bound Utah State team to the final minutes after going 2-16 in conference. The conference is stronger this year, but nothing would get me more fired up then ruining those S.O.B.s from Fort Collins season while making a MWC tourney run.
College Football:
Deion Sanders dominated a D-II school in his FCS coaching debut while simultaneously being robbed…welcome to small school college football Prime. The guy was immediately caught, which leads me to believe maybe this was a publicity stunt to get more eyes on FCS football. I actually love FCS in the spring and might want this more moving forward and hopefully some of the dominant programs like NDSU and JMU will hopefully get some notoriety they deserve. Sign me up to host a knock-off college gameday at these campuses.
NHL:
Fine, I’ll talk about it. I’m embarrassed because I don’t know jack about hockey, but the debacle from this weekend’s Lake Tahoe series means we need to talk about it. Give us more of these outdoor games! Like a fair-weather NASCAR fan cheering for crashes (Safety first-RIP Dale Earnhardt), I’m all for watching the stripes and professional athletes eat it on the ice. As a self-admitted terrible ice skater, some of these falls are the most relatable things on television. In all seriousness, the Avs/Knights game under the lights looked incredible and was worth the delay. I’m sure some players are tired of the increase in stadium series and outdoor games, but I’m all about it–just figure out a way to block out the sun from melting the ice (get on it Elon).
Other sports:
The NBA is playing basketball. Award Winning Listener Max Homa won the Genesis Invitational, which is commonly called the 8th major on the tour. Baseball is just around the corner to take us from the tournament to NHL/NBA playoffs, which will take us back to football season. Love you guys.
