Don’t come at me with the “BuT tHeY wOn ThE cOnFeReNcE iN2020” bullshit. Everyone knows that was a Mickey Mouse Covid title. With the graduation of Nick Starkel and key offensive weapons, so much of the Spartan’s success this year will be on the shoulders of their experienced, yet underwhelming defense. When you look at their roster, 95% of their defensive production is back…but their defense was less than stellar last year. They gave up 27 points per game and barely averaged a turnover per game. They return stud pass rusher Villiami Fehoko, who is a two time all MW selection and led the Spartans with 7 sacks last season. They’ll need to be way more opportunistic to give Dick Vermeil’s alma mater a bowl birth.
50/50 games
Listen, I’m getting back into the swing of this, so forgive me that I didn’t think of this section sooner. An insane person would say Wyoming is a 50/50 game for San Jose (is not a) State, but we’re completely reasonable and are clearly chalking that up as a dub for the Pokes. I genuinely think Western Michigan will win the MAC this year, so I’ll stay away from that game as well and instead turn to the New Mexico State game. The Aggies of Las Cruces were a glorified FCS team last year, but I love Jerry Kill and will never speak ill of that man. This could be a trap game between a proximity rivalry game in Fresno State and a must win game against Nevada, so I have the Spartans losing on the road. I’m curious how soon the turnaround at CSU will be under Jay Norvell with him bringing over his entire staff and half his roster to FoCo, but I have SJSU winning this game at home. The last game of the season–Hawaii vs San Jose State may very well determine who goes to the Hawaii Bowl in December. I took Hawaii based purely on Chevon Cordeiro and the swag Timmy Chang will bring to the ‘Bows program…wait Cordeiro transfered to San Jose?…hammer the Spartans. Fuck you, Todd Graham.
